   从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案,并写在答题纸相应的
位置上。

Passage One
Questions 21 to 24 are based on the following passage.

There is much discussion today about whether economic growth is desirable.Atan earlier period, our desire for material wealth may have been justified. Now,however, this desire for more than we need is causing serious problems.Even though we have good intentions,we may be producing too much, too fast.

Those who criticize economic growth argue that we must slow down. They believe that society is approaching certain limits on growth. These include the fixed supply of natural resources, the possible negative effects of industry on the natural environment, and the continuing increase in the world's population. As society reaches these limits, economic growth can no longer continue, and the quality of life will decrease.

People who want more economic growth,on the other hand, argue that even at the present growth rate there are still many poor people in the world. These proponents of economic growth believe that only more growth can create the capital needed to improve the quality of life in the world.Furthermore, they argue that only continued growth can provide the financial resources required to protect our natural surroundings from industrialization.

21.According to those who argue against economic growth we must slow down for the following reasons EXCEPT that _______.
  A. our natural surroundings are in danger of being destroyed by industry
  B. the fixed supply of natural resources marks a point beyond which economic growth cannot continue
  C. the world population is ever increasing
  D. more efforts should be made to improve the quality of our material life.

22.The word “proponents"(in Paragraph 3) probably means _______.
  A. arguments in support of something
  B. disagreements
  C. people who argue for something
  D. people who argue against something

23.The passage is mainly about _______.
  A. the conflict between economists and the industrial business
  B. the present debate on economic growth
  C. the advantages and disadvantages of economic growth
  D. the importance of the debate on economic growth

24.We may infer from the passage that _______.
  A. the author describes the case as it is
  B. the author is for economic growth
  C. the author is against continued economic growth
  D. the author is very much worried about the problems caused by continued economic growth

Passage Two
Questions 25 to 27 are based on the following passage.

It is clear that some chemicals can damage the health of animals and humans. However, this is not the only problem that can be caused by the careless use of chemicals.Chemicals can also disturb the ecological(生态的) balance of the environment. If the ecological balance is disturbed, the consequences can be extremely serious.

The history of DDT illustrates the problem.DDT,a chemical which kills insects,at first, seemed to be a perfect answer to many problems. It would control insects that caused dangerous diseases,as well as insects that caused billions of dollars of damage to crops every year.Governments permitted and even encouraged the use of DDT.Farmers in many countries began to spray it on their crops. The immediate results were good:Damage to crops went down, and profits went up.However, the chemical had effects which the scientists did not predict.First,it also killed insects which were the natural enemies of the harmful insects and which were therefore beneficial to farmers.Second, and perhaps worse,DDT did not kill every harmful insect.A few insects had natural resistance to the chemical. They survived and multiplied. In a few years there were large numbers of insects which were not affected by DDT,and there were fewer insects which could act as natural controls on these new “super-insects".Finally,it became clear that DDT was not solving the insect problem. In fact,it was making the problem worse. It then became necessary to find a second cure for the effects of the first!

25.What is the purpose of the passage?
  A. To tell that DDT can not solve the insect problem.
  B. To compare the effects of DDT with those of other cures.
  C. To argue that the ecological balance can be damaged by chemicals.
  D. To show that some chemicals can damage the health of humans and animals.

26.According to the author, what is one of the problems with DDT?
  A. It also killed insects that helped farmers.
  B. It could kill most of the harmful insects.
  C. It caused a decrease in domestic animals.
  D. It made some farmers suffer a disease which could not be cured.

27.If a farmer used DDT today,in a few years _______.
  A. he would have no problems with harmful insects
  B. insects would be an even greater problem for him
  C. his situation would not be quite different
  D. he would be in a very dangerous situation

Passage Three

Questions 28 to 30 are based on the following passage.

The standard of living of any country means the average person's share of the goods and services which the country produces.A country's standard of living, therefore, depends mainly on its capacity to produce wealth.“Wealth" in this sense is not money, for we do not live on money but on things that money can buy :“goods" such as food and clothing, and “services" such as transport and entertainment.

A country's capacity to produce wealth depends upon many factors, most of which have an effect on one another.Wealth depends to a great extent(在很大程度上) upon a country's natural resources, such as coal, gold, and other minerals, water supply and so on.Next to natural resources comes the ability to put them to use.China is perhaps as well off as the U.S.A.in natural resources, but suffered for many years from various wars, and for this and other reasons was unable to develop her resources.Another important factor is the technical efficiency of a country's people.Old countries that have trained numerous skilled craftsmen and technicians are better placed to produce wealth than countries whose workers are largely unskilled.Wealth also produces wealth. As a country becomes wealthier, its people have a large amount of saving, and can put their savings into factories and machines which will help workers to produce more goods in their working day.

28.A country's wealth depends upon _______.
  A. its standard of living
  B. its money
  C. its ability to provide goods and services
  D. its ability to provide transport and entertainment

29.According to the passage, one might infer that a peaceful country _____.
  A. will produce more wealth than any other country
  B. will produce less wealth than any other country
  C. will have a higher standard of living than those countries with rich natural resources
  D. will have more wealth than those countries with equal natural resources but less order

30.The purpose of the second paragraph is _______.
  A. to explain wealth
  B. to give advice
  C. to tell some factors that contribute to wealth
  D. to describe how a country develops its capacity to produce wealth

As probably the main object of going to school is to prepare for after life,it surely would have been very important to organize lectures or discussions so as to give students a broad view of the enormous variety of occupations. But as a matter of fact, students used to spend all their time working to a rigid curriculum(课程) and the passing of examinations gradually became the whole object of their working life. This experience of mine may have been unfortunate, but it was by no means unique; many of my friends who went to different schools confess to a similar   experience, and complain that when they had completed their school education they had not the remotest idea of what they wanted to do.
