　　Smorgasbord : noun, a collection containing a variety of things

　　Synonym: mixture, assortment, collection

　　①The dessert table included a smorgasbord of sweets, but it was hard to choose among the assortment.

　　甜点表上列出了各种各样的的甜点，但是种类实在太多了，很难选。

　　②The art festival displayed a smorgasbord of paintings and sculptures from various artists.

　　艺术节上展示了来自不同艺术家的各种绘画和雕塑作品。

　　③The magazine features a smorgasbord of stories on a wide variety of subjects.

　　这本杂志特点就是涉及的话题很广泛，里面有很多与这些话题相关的故事。

　　注解：瑞典语中有个词叫smörgåsbord，这是一种斯堪的纳维亚风格的自助餐，餐桌上摆满了各种各样热菜和冷盘供客人选择。所以设身处地不难想象客人面对这么多的食物一定是手忙脚乱，不知道吃什么才好。因此，你可以用a smorgasbord of来表达“大量;许多;各种各样;琳琅满目;种类多”这样的含义。是不是比用a lot/many这样的词高大上了许多?用出去自然很吸引眼球。

　　那么除了用a smorgasbord of，还有没有其他的词汇来表达“多”的含义呢?太多了!

　　下面将列举几个可以表达“多”的单词或短语并给出我们精心挑选的例句，这些例句大多比较贴近我们多数人的表达习惯和生活情境，没什么难以理解的地方，因此当自己实际运用这些表达的时候就没太多的阻碍。

　　⑴Oodles ['udlz]

　　我们可以用oodles of something这个短语表达“大量;很多”的意思，英文解释是a large amount of something.

　　①She has got oodles of money/cash.

　　她赚了好多钱。

　　②The recipe calls for oodles of melted chocolate.

　　做这道点心需要很多融化的巧克力。

　　⑵Myriad ['miriəd]

　　Myriad既可以作为形容词单独使用，也可以做名词在a myriad of或myriads of这样的短语中使用，意思是a very large number of something.

　　①They offered no solution for our myriad problems.

　　对于我们遇到的众多问题他们没给出解决办法。

　　②Parents face a myriad of problems bringing up children.

　　父母抚养孩子过程中遇到会遇到很多麻烦。

　　⑶Umpteen [,ʌmp'tin]

　　Umpteen是个限定词(determiner)，意思是very many; indefinitely numerous.

　　尤其是因为某件事发生已经发生无数次了，让你感到有些不快，因此使用的时候要稍稍注意一下你想表达的话是不是这个情感在里面。但是语言是很活的东西，有时候不必受这些条条框框的束缚。

　　Umpteenth是在umpteen后加上-th后缀变形得到的，意思是“第无数次”。

　　①I have taken the test umpteen times and still haven't made a passing score.

　　这个考试我已经参加无数次了，但目前一次都没通过。

　　②She checked her watch for the umpteenth time.

　　她已经不知道是第多少次看表了。

　　⑷Welter ['wɛltɚ]

　　Welter有“混乱”(state of confusion)的含义，例如这个句子：The classroom was in a welter when the teacher did not show up for class.

　　老师没来上课，教室里一片混乱。

　　所以a welter of something这个短语的意思就是a large and confusing amount or number of something，有“多而且混乱”的含义在里面。

　　①There is such a welter of conflicting rules.

　　规矩繁多而且自相矛盾。

　　②The plan was dropped amid a welter of criticism.

　　在一片批评声中，计划被取消了。

　　⑸Plethora ['plɛθərə]

　　Plethora这个词经常出现在a plethora of这个短语中，意思是a very large number of something, usually more than you need.

　　这个表达虽然也有“大量;许多”的含义，但是要注意的是这个表达通常带有“过量、超过需求”的含义。

　　①I don't see why my mother wants more shoes when she already has a plethora of them.

　　我不明白为什么我妈已经有了那么多鞋了还要买。

　　②There's a plethora of books about how to succeed.

　　关于如何成功的书非常非常多。

　　⑹Cascade [kæ'sked]

　　Cascade这个词主要是用在文学作品中。先来看看它的动词用法，这样有助于学习它的名词表达。

　　作动词时，cascade的意思是to flow or hang down in large amounts.

　　一般是指物体像水流一样倾泻而下，主语一般是像瀑布、眼泪、头发这样的词。

　　比如: The tears cascaded down her cheeks.

　　眼泪像断了线的珠子，不住地顺着脸颊流淌。

　　名词的cascade经常用在a cascade of something这个短语中，意思也是a large amount of something,但是从它的动词用法我们可以看出这个短语有“接连;不断涌现”的含义，就像水流一样绵绵不绝，这一点要仔细体会。

　　①She realized being rich came with a cascade of troubles that included greedy relatives.

　　她意识到人一旦有钱后，麻烦就会接连不断地找上门，比如贪婪的亲戚。

　　②When Jim told one lie, he had no idea it would trigger a cascade of additional lies.

　　吉姆当初撒谎的时候怎么也不会想到，一句谎言需要更多的谎言来圆谎。

　　⑺Legion ['li:dʒən]

　　我们也可以用a legion of和...be legion这两个短语表达“大量”的意思。前者中的legion是名词，而后者是形容词。

　　①The sky is studded with a legion of stars.

　　夜空布满了繁星。

　　②The number of teenagers who dropped out of school is legion.

　　未完成学业就辍学的青少年比比皆是。
